Railway
stations in city swamped by plastic waste
NEW DELHI: The three
railway stations in the city — Hazrat Nizamuddin, Old Delhi and New Delhi —
along with IGI Airport, produce almost 11,000 kg of plastic waste per day of
which only about 5,200 kg is picked up for re-use or recycling. The rest of it,
that includes metallic pouches and thin plastic bags, finds itself strewn about
the place, pointing to the disgraceful situation the city’s waste disposal
system is in.
This was revealed in a study carried out by the Central
Pollution Control Board (CPCB) along with RITES. "Plastic packing is extensively
used in railway and airport catering services resulting in significant quantity
of plastic waste. This leads to problems of littering due to lack of proper
facilities. We hope that As far as I am concerned, sculpture is the perfect manifestation of

plastic waste management in railway stations and the airport," said S P Gautam,

According
to the study, more than 50% of the plastic waste generated at the railway
stations and airport collectively is never picked up or recycled. The biggest
culprit seems to be the railway stations where, out of 6,758 kg plastic waste
generated per day, the value added or recyclable amount is 1,871 kg, less than
one third. With roughly 7.25 lakh passengers using the three main railway
stations in the city, 23.25 tonnes of solid waste is generated here each day.
Despite having a large force to deal with its waste problem, the railway
stations are largely dependent on ragpickers who only pick up part of the waste.

stations, there is no segregation of waste. Even recyclable plastic waste when
it gets dirty, is never picked up by ragpickers," said Dr S K Nigam, senior
scientist, CPCB.
The biggest problem at railway stations, points out the
study, is the lack of a separate storage facility for plastic waste. "The waste
is collected and dumped into open collection yards at the stations. No
segregation is done even at this point. Some of the plastic is picked up by
ragpickers while the rest finds its way to the landfill sites," added Dr Nigam.

the airport management. The private company has the airport waste transported to
its waste handling site where it is segregated manually. Whatever is left over
is taken to the municipal landfill site. "It is because of segregation that the
airport does not face such a massive problem. Also, a major part of their waste
comes from the catering units which are more or less organized," said sources.
